The History of the old Ferry Hotel:
Hi! It's the old Ferry Bed and Breakfast Guest House here, talking to you from beautiful Queenstown New Zealand.
I was first opened to the public in 1863 to quench the thirst of fortune hunters during the Gold Rush, and travellers en-route to Queenstown who at that time had to cross the Shotover River by a ferry, hence my name. I burnt down in 1872 but my spirit
was reclaimed and thankfully I was rebuilt as good as new in the same year. When a bridge was built over the river they kindly located it so that all the
traffic still passed by my door and I continued my service to miners, farmers and Merchants until around 1912 when they went and closed the bridge on me and
built a modern one further upstream. Well! as they say "If you can't beat'em - join'em" and so it was that I was unceremoniously cut in half and moved, by
traction engine, to my present location.
I continued to operate quite happily as a hotel until 1972 when, would you believe it? they went and built an even bigger and better bridge back near where I was born! Well I'm afraid I was a bit too frail to be shifted again so I
decided to grow old gracefully, and stay just where I am now.
I've had many owners in my time, this latest lot came from Perth Western Australia in September 1996. They are Kevin and Glenys Reynolds with their daughter Clare and Buckley is a Springer Spaniel and he is quite a character too.
It's really cool to have a family and friends around. In fact I'm feeling pretty good with the new people. They keep me lovely and warm on chilly nights and days and have furnished me with delightful period furniture and antiques.
I've even got pictures of me hanging on my walls, from the early days.
In fact I think I'm looking better now than ever and I just love having people here to stay. Next time you are looking for vacation accommodation, why don't you come to visit? » Enquiries.
